Who Needs FSSAI Basic Registration?

Mandatory for any food business with annual turnover up to Rs. 1.5 Crore under Section 31(1) of the FSS Act, 2006 (April 2026 threshold)

🏠

Home-Based Food Businesses

Selling homemade snacks, pickles, sweets, or tiffin services from home — online or offline. Swiggy/Zomato/Instamart require FSSAI number.

🛒

Petty Retailers & Street Vendors

Small shops, kirana stores, tea stalls, juice shops, pan shops, and street food vendors selling directly to consumers.

🏭

Small-Scale Manufacturers

Producing up to 100 kg/litre of food products per day — namkeen, biscuits, spices, dairy products, or any packaged food.

🚚

Food Transporters

Single vehicle operators transporting food products. Dedicated food transportation vehicles need FSSAI registration.

🥛

Small Dairy Businesses

Handling up to 500 litres of milk per day — small dairy units, milk collection centres, and cottage dairy operations.

🌾

Small Slaughterhouses

Limited slaughtering operations below the State License threshold. Applies to small poultry and meat processing units.

Documents Required

Simple paperwork — most documents you already have at home

📋 Mandatory Documents

  • Passport-size photograph of proprietor
  • Aadhaar Card of proprietor
  • Address proof of business premises (electricity bill / rent agreement) — skip if Aadhaar address matches
  • Mobile number + email ID

ℹ️ Not required for Basic: PAN, GST, Udyam, bank statements, trade license, FoSTaC certificate — if an agency asks for these upfront, it's a red flag.

Common Rejection Reasons — And How We Avoid Them

After processing 3,000+ FSSAI applications, here are the top reasons the FoSCoS portal rejects Basic Registration — and exactly how we pre-empt each one.

1. Wrong Business Type Classification

Many self-filers pick the wrong Kind of Business (KOB) code — e.g. selecting "Food Retailer" for a home baker who actually needs "Manufacturer - Small". Rejection is automatic. We verify your KOB against your actual operations before submission.

2. Address Mismatch Between Documents

The address on your Aadhaar, electricity bill, and application form must match exactly — even a missing PIN code or wrong street spelling causes rejection. We cross-check every document and, if needed, guide you on adding an address affidavit.

3. Blurry or Incomplete Document Scans

FoSCoS portal rejects documents where text is unreadable, corners are cropped, or file size is too large. We pre-process every upload — resize, sharpen, and re-take photos if needed before submission.

4. Turnover Declaration Outside Basic Range

Basic Registration is only valid for annual turnover up to ₹1.5 Crore. If you over-declare, your application is routed to State License and rejected for wrong category. We confirm your expected turnover range and switch you to the right license type if needed.

5. Missing NOC for Rented Premises

If you operate from rented premises without a rental agreement or landlord NOC, FoSCoS rejects the application. We include NOC drafting support as part of our ₹999 service — no extra charge.

6. Food Product List Errors

Selecting products from the FSSAI master list that don't match your actual operation — or leaving the list incomplete — causes review delays or rejection. We help you map your real products to the correct FSSAI categories.

7. Photograph Format Issues

FoSCoS needs a passport-size photo under 500 KB, clear face, plain background. Selfies, old photos, and wrong dimensions are rejected. We guide you through taking a compliant photo on your phone in under 2 minutes.

Our end-to-end process means you don't have to worry about any of these — if your application is rejected due to our error, we refile at no additional cost.

After Your FSSAI License Is Approved — What Next?

Getting the certificate is the beginning, not the end. Here's what you need to do next.

Step 1 — Print & Display Your Certificate

Under FSSAI rules, your 14-digit registration number must be displayed at your business premises in a conspicuous location. Print your certificate on A4, laminate it, and mount it near the entrance or cash counter. FSSAI inspectors can issue spot fines for non-display.

Step 2 — Print Your FSSAI Number on Packaging & Menus

Your 14-digit FSSAI number must appear on: product packaging labels, menu cards, bills/invoices, delivery packaging, and any marketing material. This is mandatory under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations.

Step 3 — Onboard to Swiggy / Zomato / Amazon

Food aggregators require your FSSAI certificate PDF before approving your restaurant profile. Upload it during seller onboarding — your listing typically goes live within 24–48 hours of verification.

Step 4 — Pay Annual Maintenance Fee (AMF)

From April 2026, all FSSAI registrations require an Annual Maintenance Fee payment every year. Miss it and your license is automatically "Deemed Suspended". We manage AMF for ₹799/year all-inclusive →

Common questions about FSSAI Basic Registration

Any food business with an annual turnover up to Rs. 1.5 Crore needs FSSAI Basic Registration (April 2026 — previously Rs. 12 lakhs).
